RMIT  University

The Blockchain Innovation Hub at RMIT University was established in 2017, marking the world's first social science research institute dedicated to studying blockchain technology. The Hub's research focuses on understanding the potential impact of blockchain on the economy and society. The team is made up of interdisciplinary researchers from various fields such as economics, political-economy, organisational theory, law, sociology, politics, and communications. Their research areas include crypto economics, blockchain business strategy, mapping the blockchain economy, and identifying public policy challenges that could either hinder or accelerate the adoption of blockchain technology.

Blockchain Hub

The Hub is dedicated to collaborating with industries and contributing to policy debates on digital technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning, 5G, IoT and other trust-based technologies. The Hub is located within the College of Business and Law at RMIT University, which is Australia's second-largest tertiary institution and has a global reputation for excellence in practical education and outcome-oriented research.

As a result of its ground breaking research, the Blockchain Innovation Hub and RMIT University have become leading experts in the field of blockchain technology, gaining recognition globally. In fact, in June 2019, RMIT was ranked third in the world for the study of digital currencies, behind only Cambridge and MIT, by Kaiko, a leading financial data provider.

Research Focus Area

Key Research

The RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub studies digital technologies such as blockchain, AI, machine learning, 5G, IoT, and others that are transforming the economy. They research supply chain transparency, governance of decentralized infrastructure, user control over data, and not-for-profit sector reform. The Hub collaborates with industry and policymakers to maximize the benefits of these technologies for all.

Global Focus

The RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub has established a robust research program that has enabled the Hub to build a global research network connecting with other leading research centres in the US, Singapore, Europe, and China. The Hub currently maintains active research connections with some of the most prominent institutions in the world, including Harvard University, MIT, George Mason University, UCL, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business. These connections allow the Hub to stay at the forefront of research in blockchain technology and collaborate with other leading experts in the field.

Industry Collaboration

The Blockchain Innovation Hub is leading a new initiative called the Blockchain Business Lab (BBL). The BBL is a collaborative effort between the Hub and industry to address economic, social science, and technological challenges in designing the blockchain economy. The primary goal of the BBL is to generate industry impact and feed research outcomes, enabling the Hub to stay at the forefront of blockchain technology research.
